Luis A. Campos, M.D., F.A.C.C.
Dr. Campos was born in Huancayo, Peru. He attended Colegio San Andres, a Scottish missionary school in Lima, after which he was able to pursue his lifelong dream and obtained his medical degree at Edinburgh University Medical School in Scotland. While in Edinburgh he met Ruth Gilmour, they were married prior to coming to the United States for further medical training. They have four children and seven grandchildren.
Dr. Campos did his internship in Columbus, Ohio, Residency in Internal Medicine at Georgetown Division at D.C. General, Washington D. C. Fellowship in cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.
Dr. Campos started his cardiology practice at Memorial City Hospital in 1974, where he came to help open the Cardiac Catheterization Labs at Spring Branch and Memorial City hospitals. Subsequently he was founder and Medical Director of the Wellness and Cardiac Rehabilitation programs at both institutions. At present he is Medical Director of the Congestive Heart Failure Program at Memorial City Memorial Hermann Hospital. He is very active in complex coronary and peripheral interventions, has had a longstanding interest in cardiac rehabilitation and the emotional and spiritual aspects of health.
In 2003, Luis, Ruth and a group of friends from South Main Baptist Church, conceived and founded "Operacion San Andres" (OSA), www.operacionsanandres.org , a mission to provide holistic assistance to the impoverished community of Collique, Comas, a shanty town located north of Lima. OSA has purchased a property and has full time staff to provide year round nutritional, educational and spiritual help. There are biyearly medical mission trips which now include construction workers, teachers, social workers, Christian leaders as well as medical dental and eye professionals.
Luis has received numerous awards for his medical and humanitarian work including: 2007 Special Award from the Peruvian Government to a Peruvian living abroad who has contributed to its citizens. The 2009 Frist Humanitarian Award from the Hospital Corporation of America. The 2010 Memorial Hermann Humanitarian Award to a Physician. The 2012 Peruvian American Medical Society Humanitarian Award. In his spare time Luis expresses himself through water color painting.
